Maize reached the Southwest via Mesoamerican trade links in about 2500 b.c.e. Yet full-time farming began only after 400 b.c.e., with the introduction of a more drought-resistant strain. Thereafter, southwestern populations rose and Indian cultures were transformed. The two most influential Southwestern cultures were Hohokam and Ancestral Pueblo.
