To support the nearly two hundred thousand people residing in and around Tenochtitlán, the Aztecs maximized their production of food. They drained swampy areas and created artificial islands with rich soil from the lake bottom. Aztec farmers grew food on the islands to supply the urban population. Aztec engineers devised an elaborate irrigation system to provide fresh water for both people and crops.
