Context of Massive
A new moai statue has been found on Rapa Nui, also known as Easter Island. The moai are massive human figures carved out of volcanic rock more than 500 years ago. The newly discovered statue was found in a dry lake bed in a volcano crater.
Rapa Nui is located in the Pacific Ocean, more than 2,200 mile west of Chile. It was originally settled by Eastern Polynesian people from the nearby Polynesian islands between the years 600 and 800. Islanders carved nearly 1,000 statues between the years 1100 The figures are thought to represent their godlike ancestors.
