Climate, topography, soil composition, and availability of water limited agricultural production to certain, mostly temperate areas. Within these areas, farming required that people have access to and knowledge of the few plants that could be effectively cultivated on a large scale. In the absence of these conditions, many people remained foragers and did not attempt to farm.
