Compared with the covalent sugar–phosphate bonds, the hydrogen bonds between the base pairs are weak, which allows the two DNA strands to be pulled apart without severance of their backbones. Each strand then can serve as a template, in the way just described, for the synthesis of a fresh DNA strand complementary to itself—a fresh copy, that is, of the hereditary information.
