A massive temple complex at the capital of Tenochtitlán formed the sacred center of the Aztec empire. The Great Temple consisted of two joined pyramids and was surrounded by several smaller pyramids and other buildings. Most of the more than two hundred deities the Aztecs honored originated with earlier and contemporary societies, including those they had subjugated.
