In many parts of the world, as people began cultivating plants, they also domesticated animals. Although hunters had long used dogs to track prey, it was only after 8000 B.C.E. that people in the Middle East began to tame wild sheep, goats, and cattle. Soon people in the Eastern Hemisphere domesticated other species, including water buffalo, donkeys, pigs, chickens, and—much later—horses and camels.
