Context of Permanent
During and after the Mississippian era, groups of Eastern Woodlands Indians moved to the lower river valleys of the Plains, where over time the rain fall had increased enough to support cultivated plants. In contrast to Native Americans already living on the Plains, such as the Blackfeet and the Crow, farming newcomers like the Mandans and Pawnees built year-round villages and permanent earth lodges. But they also hunted buffalo and other animals.
