Along the way, groups stopped and either settled nearby or traveled inland to establish new homes. Coastal sites as far south as Monte Verde, Chile, reveal evidence from about 12,000 b.c.e. of peoples who fed on marine life, birds, small mammals, and wild plants, as well as an occasional mastodon.
