There they encountered other bands, with whose members they exchanged ideas and goods, intermarried, and participated in religious ceremonies. As in nonmarket economies and nonstate societies throughout history, these exchanges followed the principle of reciprocity—the mutual bestowing of gifts and favors—rather than the notion that one party should accumulate profits or power at the expense of the other.
