Unlike in earlier societies, the cities were highly uneven. A few wealthy elites in these cities dominated thousands of residents, and hereditary rulers claimed kinship with religious deities. Laborers built elaborate temples and palaces—including the first American pyramids—and artisans created statues of rulers and gods.
