The earliest Paleo-Indians found a hunter’s paradise in which large mammals—mammoths, mastodons, and giant species of horses, camels, bison, caribou, and moose—roamed America, innocent of the ways of human predators. Around 9000 b.c.e., the megafauna quickly became extinct.
