As in the Southwest, densely concentrated societies had taxed a fragile environment with a fluctuating climate. Competition for suddenly scarce resources led to debilitating warfare and undermined Cahokia and its allies. The survivors fled to the surrounding prairies and westward to the lower valleys of the Plains, where they regrouped in decentralized villages.
