Besides Mesoamerica and the Andes, chiefdoms eventually emerged in the Mississippi and Amazon valleys. A few states arose in Mesoamerica after c.e. 1 and in South America after c.e. 500. Although men ruled most chiefdoms and states, women served as chiefs in some Andean societies until the Spanish arrived.
