Meanwhile, a second empire, that of the Incas, arose in the Western Hemisphere. From their sumptuous capital at Cuzco, the Incas conquered and subordinated societies over much of the Andes and adjacent regions after 1438. One key to the Incas’ expansion was their ability to produce and distribute a wide range of surplus crops, including maize, beans, potatoes, and meats.
