Although some scholars believe that Paleo-Indian hunters killed off the large mammals, most maintain that the mammals were wiped out not just by humans but by the warming climate, which disrupted the food chain on which they depended. Human beings, however, were major beneficiaries of environmental changes associated with the end of the Ice Age.
