The Aztecs were still expanding in the early sixteenth century, but rebellions constantly flared within their realm. They had surrounded and weakened, but not subjugated, one neighboring rival, while another blocked their westward expansion. Would the Aztecs have expanded still farther? We will never know because they were violently crushed in the sixteenth century by another, even more far-flung empire, the Spanish.
