Animal domestication was severely limited in the Western Hemisphere. Ancestral species of horses and camels flourished in the Americas when humans first arrived but soon became extinct. By the time Native Americans began farming, the only species suitable for taming were dogs, llamas, turkeys, and guinea pigs.
